Food Frome

Forest GardenOur last Frome Food and Land Group visit of the year was to Lydford Forest Gardens. This is a 1/4 acre community garden project in the village of West Lydford. The garden was created as a millenium project and is based on permaculture forest garden principles.

Apple StoreSandra and John Payne have recently restored an old hard-wood apple store donated to them by Food Frome member Olivia Edwards. It has ten trays and would store sufficient apples to see an average family through until Easter!

Frome Apple Day celebration is to be on Sunday 18th October at Christ Church First School and the Key Centre in Feltham Lane, Frome, BA11 5AJ, from 1pm to 4pm. There are still some things to sort out, but so far we have an apple expert, who can identify the variety of your apples; apple tasting; apple pressing; hot food - including some roast hog and apple sauce; apple games; storytelling and stalls.

Warminster MaltingsThere were some guided tours of Warminster Maltings as part of the recent Heritage Open Days. Warminster maltings is one of only 4 remaining traditional maltings in the UK. They produce high quality malt from local barley which they sell to small breweries all round the country (and as far abroad as New Zealand). It is well worth a visit if you get the chance. Here are a few pictures.

Diane Wells has contributed some delicious Recipes for Late Summer. These include Rhubarb Chutney, Apple and Orange Chutney, Plum/Damson/Greengage Chutney and Damson Tarts.

Roman OvenSpelt Flat BreadFood Frome members helped to construct a Roman-style bread oven from local stone and clay at the Bath and Camerton Archaeological Society Open Day on 5th September. We then cooked some spelt flat bread in the oven. Considering the oven was built very quickly it worked surprisingly well.Oven Temperature

Discovery ApplesWe recently harvested the first few apples from our orchard planted in early 2008 (see tree planting pictures). These apples are Discovery, one of the best early eaters.

Garden Sharing Project to be launched by Frome Town Council and Sustainable Frome. Do you have spare land you could let an enthusiastic veg grower use? Or are you an aspiring veg grower looking for land? If so, come along to the open evening on 22nd September at Frome Town Council (See diary) or reply to this email.

Food Frome is taking part in the Frome Festival. We are serving traditional teas at Rook Lane Chapel on both Saturdays and Sundays (4,5 and 11,12 July) from 2pm to 5pm.

We also have a stall at the Green Fair in the Cheese and Grain on Sunday, 5th July.
